Mike (phoenix) and Scott (keanu reeves) are both male prostitutes on the streets. However, due to their different family backgrounds, they are not "strangers".His mind is full of fragments of childhood, and his dreams of idyllic idylls in Idaho. He wants to find his long-lost mother and treat Scot as a confidant and lover. Scot, the Portland mayor's son, "stooped down" just to experience the thrill of a wild youth, knew that while he was accompanying mike all the way from Portland to Seattle, Idaho to Italy, he was not going to be his ultimate warm home.
