The film is based on a true case in Indianapolis, USA in 1965. Sylvia (Ellen Page) is busy with her parents at an amusement park, so she and her sister Janie (Haley McFarland) move in with gertrudd Baritzewski (Catherine Keener), a single mother of seven. Sylvia overhears the news that Gertrude's older daughter, Paula (Ari Graynor), is pregnant out of marriage, and breaks the news to her classmates instead of letting it out. Paula vents her anger on Sylvia, causing her to be spanked by Gertrude. After this, the alcoholic Gertrude attributed all the family problems to Sylvia's arrival, imprisoned her behind the town's back in the basement, and encouraged her children to torture Sylvia. Not only that, but other children in the town also took part in the atrocity, committing one of the worst crimes against an individual in American history.
