Powell (Anthony Hopkins) is an anthropologist specialising in the study of chimpanzees who has spent long periods of time in Rwanda observing the activities of the local chimpanzees. Two years ago, however, the mild-mannered academic suddenly took a turn for the worse and mysteriously disappeared after killing two local forest rangers as well as injuring a number of them. Now he has finally been arrested and is being held in a maximum security psychiatric prison in the United States.Intent on making a name for himself by unravelling the mystery of Powell's insanity, a young psychiatrist named Carte (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) enters the prison to speak directly with Powell. Powell is initially hostile to the visitor, and as an anthropologist he is no match for Carte. As the dialogue progresses, Kalter learns the truth of the matter: the administrator Powell killed was actually a gorilla poacher...
