On a rainy night in 1946, novelist Maurice Bendrix (Ralph Fiennes) encounters his late friend Henry Myers (Stephen Rea), a diplomat. From Henry, Maurice learns that his wife, Sarah (Julianne Moore), appears to be having an affair, which makes him jealous.
