Brenner (John Travolta), a senior officer in the "Army's Department of Criminal Investigation", and his assistant, Sam Hill (Madeleine Stowe), are ordered to clear up a mysterious murder within 36 hours, when the daughter of General Campbell (James Cromwell James Cromwell James Cromwell) daughter Elizabeth (Leslie Stefanson) is brutally murdered on a military base. As the investigation deepens, Brenner discovers that Elizabeth, who attended West Point, in addition to being a high achiever and a good-looking woman, had an unknown incident in high school, didn't have a good relationship with her father, and that General Campbell wasn't as uptight as he portrayed himself to be. While uncovering what happened Brenner also discovers many secrets in the military. In the end, the murderer is punished and the incident is put to rest.
