It's 1973 in Connecticut, USA, Thanksgiving is approaching and an ice storm is on its way. Mundane, boring family life has jaded the middle-aged couple; husband Ben Hood (Kevin Kline) has been seducing neighbor Janet Harper, and his wife (Joan Allen) has long grown impatient with her husband's lies. Son Paul (Tobey Maguire) is obsessed with the most popular girl in school. Daughter Wendy (Christina Ricci) is interested in the Watergate hearings on TV.On the night of an ice storm, the couples go to a friend's house for a cocktail party, a key element of which is a game of room key change. At the end of the reception, each wife gets to make a new love interest with another man. Their son, on the other hand, rushes off to face a temptation and a test, and their daughter is reveling in a sex game with a neighbor boy...
