Mike (Matt Damon) is a second-year law student who loses all his savings on a bet with casino owner Teddy (John Malkovich). Persuaded by his friend Knish (John Turturro), Mike makes a vow to never touch gambling again. Nevertheless, he shows his skills at a professor's card game. While picking up his old friend Worm (Edward Norton) from prison, Mike breaks his vow and resurfaces. He even delays his moot court internship in order to help Bug. Thereafter, his girlfriend, Jo, discovers evidence of Mike's gambling involvement and breaks up with him, much to his dismay. Mike is encouraged by Worm to participate in gambling games one after another. Afterwards, he realizes that he has been set up by Worm and owes a huge sum of money. He finds Worm, who is forced to reveal the truth: it turns out that Worm has been cornered by a fierce debtor. For the sake of friendship, he accepts the debtor's harsh terms, but gets into an even tougher predicament...
