The Earth in 2013 is barren, after a devastating war, the civilization that the world was originally built on is gone, and the human race is uprooted to live on this scorched earth, living and dying under famine and violence. A terrorist organization called the Hornest has expanded rapidly with its violent suppression of the inhabitants, and has grown to enormous proportions. The organization's ruler, Admiral Bethlehem (Will Patton), even has delusions of world domination.A nameless, faceless drifter (Kevin Costner) is arrested and forced into the organization. Finally, he manages to escape by seizing the only chance he has. In an abandoned jeep, he finds a skeleton skeleton. To keep warm, he puts on the skeleton's mailman's uniform, and he accidentally finds a package of expired mail. From then on, he begins traveling from town to town, delivering mail for them and falsely claiming to be the mailman. Soon, he wins the trust of the townspeople and leads them in a tenacious struggle against the totalitarian rulers.
