The story of Charlie, a six-hundred-pound man living in seclusion and avoidance in a rundown flat in rural Idaho, stubbornly, determinedly trying to eat himself to death. As Charlie moves closer and closer to his inevitable fate, his friends Lizzie (a cynical atheist nurse) and Elder Thomas (a young and promising Mormon missionary) try to find in Charlie the will to be saved, both physically and spiritually. However, only his daughter Ellie, who is estranged from Charlie, can give him a glimpse of a future beyond his current state of despair. Though Ellie is bitter, hateful and full of thorns, Charlie can find in her one last chance at redemption, perhaps even a glimmer of hope.
