When Astrid (Alison Lohman) was 15 years old, her mother (Michelle Pfeiffer) killed her lover who had abandoned her. Astrid watches as her mother is arrested. Since her mother's arrest, she has lived a life of loneliness and misery, while she was adopted.Astrid feels fatherly love from her mistress' boyfriend, but she is shot by her mistress, who thinks she is seducing her boyfriend. After recovering, Astrid lives in a foster home where she is often bullied, but since being shot she has learned that she needs to rely on her own strength to protect herself.In the home, a boy, Paul, approaches Astrid, and they both like to draw. Their relationship is not approved by her mother, who tells her that she must go on on her own no matter what, and not rely on men.Later on, Astrid is adopted by an actress, Claire (Renée Zellweger). Claire cherishes Astrid, who has been through a rough patch, but Astrid's mother is jealous of them, and after that meeting, Claire kills herself.Claire's death hits Astrid hard and she asks to be adopted by a Russian businesswoman, and she becomes self-absorbed.
