Professor Grady (Michael Douglas) was once revered as the 'wonder boy' because his novel, published seven years ago, was such a sensation in the literary world. It seemed like a good thing on the surface, but it left Grady with a heavy burden on his mind, fearing that his new work would fall too far behind, so he kept it under wraps, afraid to publish it. Now that his wife has left him, he has a lover, Sarah (Frances McDormand). This lover, his headmaster, is also the wife of his boss.Grady never imagined that at his age, bad luck would come to him one after another.
