The North American Free Trade Agreement was signed and went into effect. Many large companies have flocked to towns along the Mexican border to set up factories. They employ cheap local labor to churn out goods and dump them in the United States. The women of the Maquilaoras, as they are called, toil day and night for little pay, often returning home late at night or early in the morning. Many women were raped and killed during this dangerous time of few people. In the chaos and rundown of Ciudad Juarez, a series of killings of women in Maquiladona drew wide attention. In order to get a job as a foreign correspondent, Lauren (Jennifer Lopez), a reporter from the United States, begins to investigate a serial murder case in the town of Juarez.
