Ed (Matthew McConaughey), a clerk working in a video shop, is an ordinary, unassuming thirty-year-old man who even he can't imagine that one day he'll become a household name on television. It turns out that Cynthia (Ellen DeGeneres), the station's programme director, whose career has met its Waterloo, and whose position is threatened by dwindling ratings, has decided to produce a major twenty-four-hour reality show featuring none other than Ed.Soon enough, Ed's name is on the air, and fame and profit ensue, giving the ever-unobtrusive Ed a fantastic taste of overnight stardom. However, as time passes, Ed discovers that his fame is not just a blessing, but that the greed of the people and the omnipresence of surveillance and bondage make him want to return to the simple, happy, free life he once led.
