Amy Dooley's (Claire Foy) father, William Dooley (Tom Courtenay), was imprisoned in a debtor's prison for failing to run a business and leaving his family in huge debt. Born and raised in debtor's prison, Amy, despite her humble beginnings and difficult life, has a kind heart and is never shy about contributing to those around her or ashamed of her poverty. 21 years old, she hides from her father and goes to work as a servant in the Pearson household, where she meets the Pearson's only son, Arthur (Matthew Macfadyen). Through Arthur's help the Dooley family leave prison and become part of the upper class after receiving an unexpected inheritance for their family name. Everything around them is suddenly different as a result. Through it all, do Amy and Arthur finally come together?
