The film tells the story of Hank (Billy Bob Townsend), a white male protagonist in a small Southern town with deep-rooted racial prejudice, and Lethia (Halle Berry), a black woman whose love is tangled in death and racism. Hank grew up in an ultra-racist, conservative white family and was heavily influenced by his father. After his father retires, Hank takes over responsibility for executions. After executing a black man on death row, Hank unexpectedly meets his wife, Lecia. Soon, the two fall in love. But in a conservative and rigid environment of racial attitudes, this unbelievable meeting of fate will be like a dance, entwined and moving or difficult?
