An accident brings introverted brother David (Tobey Maguire) and hot sister Jennifer (Reese Witherspoon) to a black-and-white world: Pleasantville. It's the setting for David's long-favoured TV show: there's no colour, and the people live a quiet life without ripples or thrills. The residents live their lives like a set routine, with every day going by without incident. Husbands and wives are respectful of each other, children are well-behaved, there are no basketballs that don't go in the hoop, no books with stories written on them, and no missed dinners.The arrival of the siblings gradually changes this black-and-white world. Especially with Jennifer's effervescent personality, people begin to be surprised that they are seeing colour. Colour spreads through Pleasant Valley and those who can see are attacked by those who cannot. The conservatives can't accept colour, can't see people opening the Pandora's box of desires and instincts, but Pleasantville is still roaring with the wave of colour.
